Fruit supplements church's financial diet
At Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Emilia, a remote mountain village in the northern Philippines, the parishioners have found a fresh way to supplement the church’s income: fruit trees.
“Our volunteers are using some idle land next to the church to plant the trees, then we sell the produce in neighboring towns,” says Evangeline Stewart-Kitong, president of the parish council.
The extra income that the enterprise generates will be more than welcome. At present, the church survives solely on money collected on the first Sunday of each month. The amount raised in June, for example, was around 2,000 pesos (US$48).
“The church will use the money to pay for parish expenses and to pursue its mission to spread the Gospel in remote villages here that have no church service or chapel,” says Kitong.
This is a considerable challenge. The local residents of these far reaches of the Cordillera mountains, mostly indigenous people, have to ride on motorized boats or traverse rough terrain to reach any town. Most are happy to live there because life is simple and food is abundant. Without spending a single cent, they can pick fruit and vegetables, hunt for wild animals and catch fish.”But no matter how much we’d like to visit the church and praise God for the beauty of nature and for keeping us from harm, we can’t make it on a regular basis because we’re so far away,” says one of them.
On the occasions when they do manage to make it to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, they find a church that is rich in history. It was built in the Spanish style in 1684 after the Dominicans had established a presence in the region 80 years before. It was then abandoned in 1815 due to an ethnic revolt and fell into disuse. Its surviving remains today form a grotto, used by local schoolchildren as a prayer and study area.

The installation features a collage of religious images and pictures of Christ, Mary the Mother of Christ, Holy Family, saints, and the rosary—all closely surrounded and placed beside pictures of women who appear to be modeling for underwear or a skin

The shrine is getting ready for the young visitors to welcome the pilgrims with Masses to be held in Italian, English and Spanish, as well as Portuguese, and extended opening hours during the days when most of the youth will be in Fatima.
