This Saturday, July 23 creativity, chemistry and food will converge at Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC).

With gravity-defying performances of art glass surpassing the 2000 levels and the mercury rising steadily outside, ready to get hot and sticky in the one-of-a kind of installation.

Equal parts summer barbecue and birthday party, the festivities will showcase the talents of the family asphalt burned, a glass artist collective performance-based based in New York and Philadelphia. The group uses performative qualities of the medium as a catalyst to involve the public in the glass.

Blending the art of food, fire and glass, the group invites the public to take part in the extreme eating event by serving hors d'oeuvres hot out of the furnace from poured glass grills, spinning towers of fire and hot glass sculpture. During their PGC performance, 5 daring artists will use hot glass to cook and serve food items such as sausage, roasted chicken, sirloin steak, grilled pineapple, devils on horseback (read: dates stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon), and Mary Jane S'mores.

Exploring the intersection between art, craft, ritual, and design, the collective designs experience-based performances that create moments of beauty and spectacle, while simultaneously demonstrating various properties of glass and up-ending traditions. Each performance promises to share meals, demonstrates cooking, showcases edible sculpture, reinvents objects, and activates public spaces.

"We are creating an experience where the audience is a vital part of the work. Glass-making is something that is esoteric, but cooking is accessible and people can be included and relate to it," says Erica Rosenfeld, with Burnt Asphalt Family. The collective of teachers, fine artists, fabricators, and designers first formed in 2007, when its members met during a fellowship at Millvale, NJ-based WheatonArts, which includes a recreation of an 1800s-era glass factory. "We wanted to explore post-war rituals that bring families together, such as cocktail parties, barbecues, TV dinners, and turkey dinners. Glassblowing is something that's a spectacle and also something organic that requires a team of people--everybody is necessary."

Benefitting the PGC's programming and residencies, Hot & Sticky will also feature tent-covered festivities, dance performances, live music, BBQ fare, and plenty of ice cream for your cool down.
