Florida-breds take aim on Grade 1 races
Turbulent Descent runs in the $250,000 Test Stakes and opens at odds of 6-5. The 3-year-old tries for a third Grade 1 victory after winning the Santa Anita Oaks in March at Santa Anita Park and the Hollywood Starlet Stakes at Hollywood Park in December.
She has won five of seven career races and never finished worse than second. Her last race was in June in the Acorn Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, where she finished a disappointing second after going off as the short-money favorite. That race was a 1-mile contest. Her only other attempt at the distance was also a second-place effort in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G1) in February at Santa Anita.
The Test is a 7-furlong race. She won her last try at that distance in the Beaumont Stakes (G2) at Keeneland in April.
Bred by Ocala Stud, Turbulent Descent is by former Florida stallion Congrats and has earned more than $678,000.
She is owned by a partnership that includes Blinkers On Racing Stable. The same operation bought the filly for $160,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales April 2-year-old sale. Blinkers On is a racing partnership company based in California.
The second choice, Her Smile, opens at odds of 4-1 and is coming off a victory in the Grade 1 Prioress Stakes at Belmont on July 4. She ran third in the Acorn behind Turbulent Descent but was beaten by more than 10 lengths.
She is owned by celebrity chef Bobby Flay.
Fellow Florida-bred Pomeroys Pistol will also race and is listed at odds of 8-1. The 3-year-old daughter of Pomeroy was second in the Prioress. She is also a graded stakes winner having taken the Forward Gal Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park in January.
She was bred by Hardacre Farm and is owned and trained by Amy Tarrant. The race is scheduled for 5:12 p.m. and is No. 9 on the card.
The day's feature at Saratoga is the $750,000 Whitney Invitational Handicap (G1), where Florida-bred Flat Out is the 4-1 opening favorite.
The 5-year-old son of Flatter completed a long comeback with a long-shot victory in the $300,000 Suburban Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park in July.
Going off at odds of nearly 14-1, Flat Out stayed off the pace in the 1 1/8-mile Suburban before going four wide around the turn. He caught the early leader in the stretch and pulled away for an impressive 6 1/2-length win.
That first graded stakes win for Flat Out was a long time coming after a year and half of recovery from a stress fracture in his shoulder suffered in the Arkansas Derby in April of 2009. After the fracture healed, the horse struggled with quarter cracks to his hooves. Most of the hoof on one of his feet had to be removed and allowed to regrow.
