PI Newswire :: Married Miss. man, mistress get jail time for love ...
Cheating spouses have been the root cause of countless marriage break-ups. But one Mississippi man found out the hard way that straying from your wife can also land you in trouble with the law.
He and his alleged mistress ended up behind bars, after the man’s hurt and angry wife took her case to court.
In the state of Mississippi, if you break your marital vows, you also break the law. When Cortiga Smith Williams suspected her husband of three years was having an affair, she began researching her options.
That’s when she discovered that cheating is a crime in Mississippi. Williams says, “One night, he didn’t never come home, so I had called the hospitals and police stations. Thought something had happened to him and then come to find out, he was over this young lady’s house and I went over there and got mad and do what people do when they see stuff that hurts them.”
So she filed adultery charges. Her husband Lashawn Williams and his alleged mistress, Roshanda Jackson, were both arrested and went to jail.
This law has been on the books in Mississippi for nearly 150 years. The penalty for adultery or fornication is a fine of $500 or six months in prison.
Williams says, “So I got on the Internet and I searched what laws for Mississippi for adultery and that’s when I found that law. So that Monday morning, I went down there and went to Justice Court and I filed the charges on them. You cannot house a married person married to someone else. No. Uh-uh. That’s one of the ten commandments, thou shall not commit no adultery.”
Williams and Jackson were booked at the Noxubee County jail earlier this month.
