Shiloh girl brings home bronze medal from Special Olympics in Greece

Emily Biondo had never been away from her parents for more than a few days, so her three-week trip to Greece this summer was a big deal.

Mother Linda, 41, of Shiloh, packed letters for her to read every day to keep from getting homesick.

"They said things like, 'Take a lot of pictures,' and 'I miss you,' and stuff like that," said Emily, 18, who has an intellectual disability.

Emily was one of about 300 U.S. competitors at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens and one of 10 members of the U.S. women's gymnastics team.

She won a bronze medal in uneven bars. It was presented to her by Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, winner of three Olympic gold medals in 1976.

"That was incredible," said Emily, who completed her studies at Belleville East in May and will continue in the school district's Assisted Learning program. "It was the most amazing thing that happened to me (on the trip)."

History, culture and tear gas

Linda and her husband, Tom, flew to Greece to see Emily compete, but they stayed in a different hotel and got to spend only one day with her.

The three went to see the Parthenon and other ancient buildings on the Acropolis.

"We all got sunburned," said Tom, 49, a former mortgage broker who cares for the couple's seven children. "There's no shade, and the ground is all marble. The sun reflects off everything. It just cooks you."

The Biondos enjoyed the history and culture of Athens, but they were surprised by widespread graffiti and traffic chaos.

Rioting also caused complications. People were protesting government austerity measures designed to solve the country's debt crisis.

Public transportation was shut down for days, so the Biondos couldn't cruise to the Greek Islands. Windows got broken at restaurants and shops near the Hellenic Parliament building.

"We got to smell tear gas for the first time," said Linda, who is vice president of sales for Christian Homes retirement communities.

The World Summer Games were held in Panathinaiko Stadium, which hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896. It was built from ruins of an ancient Greek stadium.

"There were no seats," Tom said. "You sat on marble. (The stadium is) really neat, but it's old."

Finding Emily's niche

The Biondos have been married 21 years. Their other children are Jennifer, 19, Dominic, 15, Daniel, 14, Sarah, 13, Noah, 9 and Madison, 2. They have an eighth child on the way.
