Four citizens to vie for Niles school board spot
Ernest is a former teacher and administrator; Martin is a Niles graduate with three children in school; Crayton is a former member of the board who served for 10 years as well as a program director for YouthBuild, part of Michigan Works; and Harrell was a voice of opposition when the board chose to close Eastside Elementary School last year. Four candidates are in the running for appointment to the Niles Community Schools Board of Education: Jeff Harrell, Jill Ernest, Mary Crayton and Jon Martin. A seat opened up on the board after Mike Dreher resigned last month.

Niles Community School District and 150 others
Last week Senate Republicans made it clear that their priorities were with big business and not with our state’s children, working families and senior citizens. As I stated on the Senate floor, they are choosing corporate greed over kids in need by taking hundreds of millions of dollars out of public education to support an unprecedented, unproven tax handout for big business.
Senator Proos joined his Republican caucus in supporting these drastic cuts to local schools, choosing to plummet roughly 150 school districts into bankruptcy in order to fund a $1.8 billion business tax break. Niles Community School District alone will be facing a $2,849,454 slash in funding.

The Senate Republicans rushed through a series of budget proposals without a single Democrat’s vote, budgets that place the burden of Michigan’s struggling economy on our most vulnerable citizens, our children, seniors and working families. The Senate Democrats are united in standing up for our priorities, and while we recognize reforms are necessary, we cannot have those conversations until we’ve protected those who make Michigan great from being punished in the process .You can’t move Michigan forward if you sacrifice the workforce, the entrepreneurs and the business people of tomorrow in the process.
