Ford's Mulally on 'Letterman' tonight

Ford's Mulally on 'Letterman' tonight Exec may need to display both chatting, bagging skills Alisa Priddle/ The Detroit News

Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally will talk about electric cars and maybe bag a few groceries today when he appears for the first time on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman."

Mulally joins a guest list that includes actress Emma Stone, who will be promoting her movie "The Help," and pop-punk band Blink-182. The show begins at 11:35 p.m.

Letterman's interest in electric cars and Ford's interest in getting its message out in a culturally relevant manner led to Mulally's appearance after years of discussions, said Ford spokeswoman Karen Hampton.

She said Mulally is expecting to talk about Ford and plans to expand the automaker's electric vehicle lineup with three more vehicles by the end of next year.

But Hampton is a bit worried that Mulally should also be practicing his bagging skills. As part of the preparations, she learned both Mulally and Letterman had jobs early in their careers bagging groceries. Letterman, the man behind "stupid pet tricks" is known for wacky stunts.

Mulally's appearance is not connected to the recent "Letterman" show in which X Games rally car champion Tanner Foust parallel drift-parked a Ford Fiesta into a spot between two New York taxis on 53rd Street. Foust is part of a team of X Games champions promoting Ford vehicles.

Nor is the appearance tied to a February show when Letterman said he would buy a Ford or Nissan vehicle from the first salesman to arrive on set. Ahmed Younes of Manhattan Ford dashed over and sold the comedian a Ford Fusion.
