The Bay Wedding Registry | Expert Wedding Guide

My fiance and I are about a year away from our wedding, so we are going to register soon. We thought we would register at The Bay (we live in Ontario, Canada) because it has a huge selection and has stores across Canada (almost half our guests are from out of province). BUT my sister just got married in August and they had nothing but issues with their registry. Half of their items got repeated so they had to ask for gift receipts to exchange things (which is what a registry is supposed to prevent) and all the items they returned went onto gift cards, they wouldn't give them cash, so now they have over $500 in gift cards for The Bay and can't buy alternative things that their guests have suggested as replacement gifts for the repeats. I bought my sister something off their registry for her shower. It came in 4 weeks late (missing the shower date) and once it did come in they called me to come pick it up. I told them I wanted to leave it at the store so she could pick it up with all her other wedding presents since it was too late for the shower. My sister went to pick it up after her wedding and she was told the item was sold out and she could have the value on a gift card. I'm really mad because The Bay sent me a receipt for the item (not a gift card) in the mail and called me before the wedding telling me I could pick up the gift. So apparently the sold the gift I bought her, and now want he to have a gift card instead (and the item is discontinued and sold out now). Is this a common occurrence? I am really hesitant to register there now. Any other suggestions for where to register in Ontario, Canada. Do you know what I found? We didn't register for our wedding, but I have used the Bay registry for others, just hadn't heard about problems with them. Other ideas – Sears (in store and on-line); Zellers and Home Outfitters; Canadian Tire; WalMart, Home Depot; — not sure what other stores are nationwide, I'm in SK.
