Summer Saturday evenings at Sonora Desert Museum

Publicized as a world-renowned zoo, natural history museum and botanical garden the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a 21-acre nature park that has been carefully adapted to more than 300 animal species and 1,300 kinds of plants plus reptiles and insects—all in their natural environmental Sonoran Desert settings.

June thru August the museum is open on Saturdays to 10 p.m. with reduced admission.

Ever wonder which desert animal dug into the garden overnight? Most likely it was a poor-sighted javelina whose keen sense of smell leads it to an area where they can dig up roots and bulbs—and drip systems—with their sharp hooves or snouts and devour a prickly pear, needles and all.

Visit and learn about the habits of the coyote—the famous desert animal and symbol of the west. What environments can they survive in? What foods do they devour?  Which senses are the sharpest?

Visitors may also learn about the habits of javelinas, coatis, snakes and other desert wildlife by touring this beautiful, vast and educational zoo-museum.

Fascinating facts

Next to bees, butterflies are the second largest group of pollinators. Butterflies don’t have lungs, they taste with their feet and smell with their antennas. A butterfly egg is about the size of a period on a printed page, and they can’t fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees. Fascinating, isn’t it!
