When the new full-body “porno” scanners appeared in airports across the country, I was fairly upset. Hence, I wrote polite but frank letters to my representative and senator, who both had supported the law. At the very least, their aides were forced to read my points. The letters were more a politely written insult than an actual request to change the law.

Of course, congressmen don’t really care about our letters: I witnessed this firsthand while working on TARP in D.C. So I had no illusion that the recipients would miraculously change their minds in favor of my position. During TARP negotiations, members of Congress were receiving calls and letters against the bank bailouts at a ratio of 500:1… And we know how that turned out.

Anyway, I had completely forgotten about my letters; but then one day, a response arrived from my representative’s office. The letter was predictably laden with BS and propaganda. A few weeks later, another letter arrived from the senator. This one was even worse, pledging undying allegiance to the national security state.

Was I angry at the propaganda within the letters? No; actually I was quite happy with it. I wasn’t expecting much from these congressmen, but they gave me real treasures. Many folks keep letters from famous politicians supporting some historic bill or another. But here I had something far greater – letters from congressmen reassuring a constituent of the necessity of the full-body scanners.

I plan to save these letters, but for a much different reason than most might expect. When my future grandkids are living in a complete police state, how cool will it be for them to find two congressional letters addressed to grandpa regarding a major step to increasing state power? Or, think about a similar letter with regards to the economy. My children and grandchildren will live in a dilapidated and bankrupt United States of the future. It would surely be inspirational for them to know grandpa was fighting against the bailouts, the debt, and the stimulus packages before everything went to hell.

Now, I don’t plan to write Congress letters over every little thing – instead, only monumentally bad decisions that will reverberate across the generations. It might not change the world, but it will make some interesting memorabilia for the next generation… souvenirs of America in Decline.
