District to focus on what is wrong with high school CSAP scores
However, when the Colorado, 2011 student evaluation scores of the test program were released Wednesday, the statistics show a different picture. From 2010 to 2011, tenth graders, three grammar schools - Greeley Central, Greeley West and Northridge - lost 4 percentage points in reading, from 56 percent to 52 percent. Grade nine students from 57 to 49 percent. The reading was not the only area where test scores fell Greeley high school, however. Of the 21 areas tested, the scores fell in 15 and was the second consecutive year of substantial decline. Datteri said the districts mix of students, especially the high percentage of those who are learning English, makes for difficult challenges. She said studies show it takes a student three to five years to learn an academic language before they can fully engage as students. Additionally, the older the student is, the more complex the language is, making it even more challenging for high school teachers. In addition, the number of English language learners has increased 51 percent, from 2,509 students in 2005 to 3,792 in 2011. And per-pupil funding from the state has decreased by nearly 8 percent per year for the past three years. All this combined makes for big challenges at all grade levels, but at the high school level, that challenge is much greater. They need time to learn what school is, Devine said. School is not just about learning the language, but also the academic language. They have to learn social norms and expectations, too. Not only are we teaching language, but we have to teach them to read, and some of them are not even literate in their first language, or have a written language. If I take a kid at a third-grade level to a sixth-grade level in one year, that kid grew by three grade levels very quickly, but he is still not at a ninth-grade level, Cousins said. So he is still going to show unsatisfactory on the CSAP. If thats a Somali kid that just moved here and spent the last two years in a refugee camp, thats a tough nut to crack. Some of the research out there says it takes a minimum of one hour a day of doing nothing but reading for pleasure to get better at reading. At the high school level, we not only dont have those hours anyway, but we also have other requirements for gradation.Sixth Grade Math Problems - News
