Grand Designs: Jewelry-maker fashions career of her dreams

SAN JUAN — Local jewelry-maker Nadia Baughman keeps a treasured voicemail saved on her phone, from Jan Harris, executive sales director for Mary Kay Cosmetics, to remember the moment when her career changed.

“My earrings are perfect,” the message gushes. “They’re going to be showstoppers. … Oh my God, they’re perfect — absolutely, positively. I love them. Love, love, love … I’m so glad I found you.”

“When I heard that, I nearly died,” Baughman said.

The 31-year-old is still giddy that a PSJA girl could go from making her own jewelry for fun in the Rio Grande Valley to designing custom-ordered pieces that have been worn on stage and on television.

Baughman originally wanted to go into law enforcement and trained with the San Juan Police Department while in high school. But, loud and social, she liked to go to parties in jewelry that matched her personality and began designing her own, which a store in McAllen made for her.

Baughman said she went back to the store and noticed some of her designs in the window, which spurred her to begin making and marketing it herself.

She started selling jewelry at events in Colorado, where Baughman visited frequently and sensed a market more appreciative of creative art pieces than what she saw in the Valley. She remembers setting up stands for festivals in Grand Lake, Colo. — home to all of 430 residents — and in Steamboat Springs, where September brought knee-deep snow.

Baughman met Harris during a sleet storm in Grand Lake in June 2010, and Harris commissioned her to make a 5-pound crystal necklace and bracelet set to wear before a crowd of 8,000 at the Mary Kay Annual Convention in Dallas.

From there, Baughman decided to build a career.

“I just thought, ‘God put Jan Harris in my path for a reason — it’s show time,’” she said.

The following spring, Baughman met Emmy-winning actress Jeanne Cooper from The Young and the Restless in San Antonio. Baughman — who had grown up with her mother telling her that the show’s theme song, “Nadia’s Theme,” was written for her — was thrilled when Cooper commissioned a triple-strand turquoise necklace to wear during an episode.

“I went from the tornadoes and snowstorms of Colorado to serving all these celebrity clients,” she said.
