Aunt Helena

Fourth of July fireworks are fun for most but often not for our four-legged friends, Dear Reader. Sweet Maddi, a delightful dog belonging to Nancy and Mark Anderson, was in the family’s driveway on her way into the house when the fireworks display erupted and she bolted without collar and tags. The 4-year-old Maddi is a caramel, black and white malamute/cattle dog mix, knee-high, trim with perky ears and friendly, smart and much loved. If you find her, please give Nancy and Mark a call, 968-5118. They are understandably distraught.

On a happier note, we’ve learned that Brian Cole, St. Helena High School Class of 2007, graduated in June with a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. While there, Brian also participated in cross country, track and field and was a member of the Anarchy Society. His parents are Wendy and Chris Cole. Hats off to Brian!

And you may not have realized it but Vineyard Valley was a hive of activity on the Glorious Fourth. First, there was a much anticipated parade which included The Curb Jumpers Senior Marching Team in decorated walkers and scooters; The Vineyard Valley Yacht Club and float; then parade Grand Marshals Dolly Doyle — 102-1/2, by the by — and Ruth Clark, 96, riding in Russ Aves’ 1941 Buick Roadmaster convertible, all three of them beauties. They were followed by a gaggle of grandchildren on decorated bikes; precious pets in costume; marching seniors waving American flags. There were more floats, more patriotic costumes and at parade’s end — games and a barbecue. And prizes, we must add. Earning medals for their winning efforts were Marion Richter (Best Group, Curb Jumpers); Dolly and Ruth (parade co-Grand Marshals); Myrna Caratti (Best Float, the “Yacht”); Don Harrison (Best Golfer); Mary O’Donnell (Poker Champ); Lindsay Nickel (Most Patriotic Costume and Best Pet entry, Sophia the Dancing Dog); and Rene Richichi (Best Youth entry). Huzzahs for the Vineyard Valley Fourth of July parade committee — Bob Fitzgerald, Mary Lou Peterson and Myrna!

Calendars out! Please. Inveterate travelers Robyn and Joe Orsini will be giving a travel log, “All About Morocco,” at Rianda House Senior Activity Center from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24. Joe took some breathtakingly lovely photographs which might just persuade you to book a flight or a cruise to this intriguing North African country.

My '41 Special has a 1947 engine in it according to the engine number - since it is the same engine, it generally passed muster when it was judged in 2007. An original engine will either have a pipe from the top of the valve cover to the air cleaner or a plug covering the hole as there was something to the effect of a dealer bulletin to remove that PCV style of connection. Derek: That pipe removal was covered in the 1942 Service Bulletins. Problem was the crankcase fumes were being drawn through the carb and causing "coking " of the jets. Early attempt at PCV. By the way my newly acquired 37 40C has a 47 engine also, although it is not yet in the car. As the original engine disappeared years ago, the former owner acquired this one that had been mounted in a 37 M46 so some (but not all) the correct 37 parts needed for the changeover were there. I'm acquiring those parts now. I'll probably paint the engine the original 37 color as well. Only the knowledgeable Straight Eight people will know the diffference. Good to meet you at Danvers. Please, if it is indeed an official replacement engine, leave it black. You have documentation to satisfy the BCA judges. We all have interests in Buick history. This is a great example of Buick history that is rarely seen, and I would hate to see it covered with red paint. I guarantee it will draw a crowd at any show due to its rarity, and it will conjour up many conversations about the history of replacement engines, of which many people are not aware. Please keep it black and preserve the history of the car.
