What type of business is it? A retail candy and gifts shop.
What specifically does your business do? We specialize in bulk candy sold by the pound. We have sugar free and gluten free candies. We sell gifts, balloons, flavored popcorn, make gift baskets, and have party rentals. We also do birthday parties because every kid wants to “party like a kid in a candy store.”

Why did you decide to open this business/location? I love working with people, and have an extensive marketing and business development background but never found fulfillment in the corporate world. I wanted something kid/family friendly, something fun in Conway, and after visiting a Dylans Candy Bar I knew I had to have one.
What is the best part about owning/operating this business? It’s just fun. I love hearing the kids scream “candy” the minute they walk in the door. Seeing the fulfillment people get out of “treating” themselves makes it worth doing.
What has been the biggest surprise that has happened since opening this business? Just the support I’ve gotten from the community. Everyone has been so welcoming.
What is the best piece of advice you received before going into this business? That working for yourself is a 24/7 job and that I’d better be prepared for that.
What is the most important piece of advice you would give to someone starting out in business? To do your research, contact the local Chamber of Commerce and run your business thoughts through them. They know what works and what doesn’t. They can also help with demographic data and market trends. Also, talk with other local business owners and establish a relationship with them. I did research on this type of store almost a full year before opening.

blue raspberry, buttered popcorn, coffee and the best-selling molasses-peanut butter flavor. The candy is sold in a retail store on the premises at 56 Manley St. from 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, and wholesale to individuals and businesses.

Those bags of microwave popcorn that are available all over the place sure are convenient, but one time I opened a bag to see what was inside and smelled the contents. The oil smelled rancid and decidedly non-buttery and awful with chemicals. Put me off microwave popcorn permanently and I don't care how great it smells when it's cooked. It must be some kind of dark chemistry magic. This corn comes from the bulk bins at whole foods and kept in a jar in the pantry. I can mill the popcorn to powder and make homemade polenta. I can use the milled corn for addition to bread, cornbread, biscuits, to mix with steamed rice, as a corn-flavored thickener, to supplement masa for tortillas, coat fried chicken and fish along with wheat flour, crackers, all kinds of odd and adventurous things. Try doing any of that with microwave popcorn -- truly a one trick pony Ordinarily I would treat the spices and the cheese separately. Unsalted butter melted in the same pot that popped the corn off the heat but while it is still hot. This way the seasoning can cook briefly in the hot melted butter before being drizzled over the popcorn without melting the cheese. But this time I mixed it all together and sprinkled it over the finished popcorn that was drizzled with butter. The wet butter gives the finely grated cheese and the powdered spices a way to stick to the popcorn. The cohesion can be assisted with a few seconds in the microwave which will then melt the cheese to the surface of the popcorn so it doesn't all end up at the bottom of the bowl, although that can be sort of fun too.
