Beeston Village News & Events - we 5 August 2011
MOTH TRAPPING AND BIRD RINGING : The next bird ringing and moth trapping is on Sunday, August 14, from 9.00am at Cos Lodge. Derek Gruar and John Day will be in charge. The bird ringing in August 2010 culminated sensationally, when Derek Guar caught 2 spectacular kingfishers, a male and a female. To see details do go to Katie Fuller's remarkable website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bogbumper/archives/date-taken/2010/08/15/ . The male kingfisher was caught on the Bug Pond that was specially designed as habitat for wildlife. Alan Foster and Roger Cope put a tree branch over the water especially to provide a perch for a kingfisher, so it was particularly satisfying to catch the bird in that exact situation. The female was subsequently caught in the John's Copse. 58 birds were trapped of 12 species. Pictures of the whitethroats can also be seen on Katie Fuller's website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bogbumper/4281474185/ . Despite it being a cold blustery, showery night last year 72 moths of 25 species were trapped, with 3 new species for Beeston. Muntjac can be heard barking in the evening and comma butterflies, grasshoppers and cricket abound in the village at present. Katrina Bourne on her regular survey of the riverbank is keeping a vigilant eye out for signs of mink which threaten the local water vole population.PLANTER AT THE NORTHERN END OF THE GREEN : The planter at the northern end of the Green was damaged on Thursday night and pushed off its plinth. There have been heavy machines working on the A1 parked by the top end of the Green for most of the week. There were no wheel marks on the grass so one may have been turning round and caught the planter as it went passed. It had already been noticed that two plants had been stolen from the planter, which have kindly now been replaced by Katrina Bourne. Members of Beeston Open Gardens committee were going to see if the planter could be lifted back onto the slabs at the weekend.
HERITAGE ADVENTURE : Katrina Bourne has made available 2 books, which give a good insight into what villages looked like, before they were systematically altered in the 20th century. The Heritage Adventure is looking at researching changes in Beeston during the last century, at the beginning of which a lot of the cottages were just wattle and daub, with earth floors which just rotted away. If you would like to look at the books please contact Katrina at 19, the Crescent or Poppy Cope at Cos Lodge.
