Ex-cop faces sexual abuse charge

Former Fort Dodge Police Officer Galen Hindt turned himself in Saturday to face felony sexual abuse and extortion charges.

Hindt, 46, pleaded not guilty in Webster County Magistrate Court to third-degree sexual abuse and extortion. He was ordered by Judge William Thatcher to report to the Department of Corrections for supervision and to surrender any and all weapons to the Department of Public Safety by Monday.

Hindt is accused of forcing a woman to have intercourse against her will in his apartment on April 6. The complaint filed by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation alleges Hindt also told the woman, whom he met at Cricket's bar, that if she didn't accept his offer of a ride home, he would arrest her for operating while intoxicated.

Hindt's attorney, Darren Driscoll, asked Saturday that Hindt not be required to post bond, since he turned himself in after learning a warrant for his arrest had been issued July 26. Since resigning from the Police Department in April, Hindt has been working as a truck driver, and Driscoll asked that Hindt not be required to remain in Iowa since it would interfere with his job.

Driscoll said the state was aware of Hindt's out-of-state trucking job.

"It has not been an issue up to this point," he said.

Thatcher agreed to Driscoll's request, and said it appeared the state couldn't have been too concerned about Hindt being a flight risk, as the investigation had been ongoing for four months.

Because of a conflict of interest with the Webster County attorney's office, the case will be prosecuted by the Iowa attorney general's office. Driscoll waived a preliminary hearing, and the case will be sent to District Court for scheduling.

According to the DCI complaint, Hindt sat down near the alleged victim - identifed in court documents only by her initials - approached her and told her if she didn't accept a ride to her apartment with him, he would have her arrested for drunk driving. Instead of taking her to her home, the report says, he took her to his apartment where they drank a few beers.

"At one point," the complaint said, "he pulled out a set of handcuffs and twirled them around saying that he could use them on her."

The alleged victim said Hindt pushed her onto the bed, forced her to have sex and choked her. When he fell asleep, she said, she left the apartment and went to a relative's home. The cousin called a local law enforcement officer, and the alleged victim went to the emergency room at Trinity Regional Medical Center.
