Norfork student joins Arkansas Youth Board Submitted by BONNIE BRANDSGAARD
For the past few years, the news has been pretty good, said Jacob Smith who was recognized at the Arkansas Youth Extinguishing Smoking Team leadership conference as one of 21 new Arkansas YES Team board members.
"There has been a big and lasting change in kids' attitudes about each other and smoking," Smith said.
One of the positive things that Smith learned from a state survey is that Arkansas teenagers said they prefer to avoid secondhand smoke and to date someone who doesn't smoke is up to around 77 percent with both genders.
"So, if a young person starts smoking, they are making themselves less attractive to three-fourths of the opposite sex, and that's a high price to pay along with the cost to your wallet and lungs," he said.
During the conference, Smith also learned about the American Legacy Foundation reported that family-rated films and cartoons recruit close to 400,000 kids every year to start smoking.
"Kids watch favorite musicians, Hollywood stars and cartoon characters smoke and think it's glamorous," Smith said. "Some of them watch the movie villains smoking and think they want to be like the villains, who usually get the most laughter with their 'mouthy' remarks. It has a huge impact."
According to Smith, no one has been successful in stopping those cartoon figures on Saturday morning, so it's up to parents to turn to another channel and boycott any movie with smoking.
"Nothing good comes from it," he said.
To help minors stay away from tobacco, four students, two adults and the Baxter County Tobacco Control Committee program coordinator recently completed a three-day leadership training conference provided by the Arkansas Youth Extinguishing Smoking (YES) Team Board and professional staff.
"The YES Team conference showed us ways to speak up for students' health over tobacco interests," said high school student Andy Southard. "We also learned how to help our friends and classmates be more aware of the cost the tobacco industry can havemultiply $10 each day times 30 or 40 years of smokingand how all those chemicals and nicotine can hurt your daily health skin, teeth, lungs, mouth, stomach, heart and that of your future children too."
"When one out of five of today's students admit that they regularly smoke, we have yet another generation using tobacco," said Garrett Ramsey, Baxter County Alternative School health and physical education teacher and BCTCC coalition volunteer.
