News: Life-to-Date Wii & DS Sales Figures
Nintendo's annual report shows just how many Wii and DS units have been sold, as well as sales figures for key software titles too.
Nintendo's annual report for the financial year ending March 2011 has been translated and released for the public to explore. While the company has hit headlines recently for fledging 3DS sales and shares dropping but looking at the figures for last year they're not in dire straights quite yet. The report contains details about how well the Nintendo DS and Wii have done as well as a number of software titles for both consoles.
The DS family of consoles, being the Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL, has sold a staggering 146.42 million units worldwide as of March 31, 2011. Considering the original Nintendo DS was launched in November 2004 that is approximately 25 million units sold each year. 839.48 million software units have been sold in that time, equal to 5.7 software units being purchased alongside each hardware unit.
The top selling DS software titles are all primarily Mario ) sold 48.41 million units. The top selling titles for the DS are as follows:
New Super Mario Bros. - 26.88 million Nintendogs - 23.46 million Mario Kart DS - 21.04 million Brain Age/Training - 18.96 million Pokémon Diamond/Pearl - 17.57 million Brain Age 2/ More Brain Training - 14.83 million Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver - 11.90 million Pokémon Black/White - 11.51 million Animal Crossing - 11.51 million Super Mario 64 DS - 9.65 million Mario Party DS - 8.21 million Pokémon Platinum - 7.43 millionIt is worth noting just how impressive the sales figures for Pokémon Black/White is considering these numbers are only up until the end of March 2011 and they had only just been released outside of Japan during that month. The total of all the software listed above account for 183.23 million units of the 839.48 million total software units sold, equivalent to just under 22%.
The Nintendo Wii sold 86.01 million units up until March 21, 2011. This means that the Nintendo Wii has sold roughly 20 million units per year worldwide since its launch in late 2006. Life-to-date software sales for the Nintendo Wii is an impressive 716.09, meaning approximately 8 software titles have been purchased alongside each hardware unit. The biggest seller is, unsurprisingly, Wii Sports .

Worldwide, the DS family of consoles — that's DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL/LL of course — has shifted a massive 146.42m units. An estimated 93.42m of those are the DS Lite model; in fact, between April and June Nintendo sold twice as many DS Lite consoles as 3DS machines in North America. Makes you think.
What about those little cartridges that fit into the machine, though? Nintendo estimated 839.48m units of software have been sold alongside the consoles, another colossal number, with New Super Mario Bros. the top-selling game with an enormous 26.88m copies shifted all around the world, just ahead of Nintendogs 's 23.64m sales and Mario Kart DS 's 21.04m units.
Interestingly, while six Wii titles have sold over 20m units, only three DS games have reached the same milestone, despite the much greater number of DS consoles sold. The ratio of software-to-hardware is also much lower than Wii: while Wii owners bought an average of around 8.3 games each, DS players bought 5.7 titles to entertain them. I just counted my stack of DS games and it’s 33…not trying to brag but I love my DS Lite. I can’t imagine only having 5 games for it. I’d like to take this opportunity to mention some of my not well known favorites: Populous DS, Retro Game Challenge, Age of Empires: Mythologies (and yes I like it better than the PC version).
@TheAmazingRacoon : My previous comment was incorrect as well. I found another stack of DS game cases plus a few I lost cases for so I have 48 DS games and only two 3DS (so no palindrome for me maybe I’ll just have to buy more to make it so again ). My Wii count was at 37 and it seems fitting since I’ve had the DS (fat) from day one and it was a year and a half after launch before I got a Wii. It seems we’ve been way upstaged by someone with 100+ in both cases (SKTTR, you might consider professional help)

Its no surprise that they sold more DSlites than 3DSs between those months. Everywhere I looked like Target and Bestbuy they slashed the prices of their DSlites big time. Yesturday when I was at Target I saw that DSlites were going for $90.
