AP IMPACT: Some 9/11 charities failed miserably

NEW YORK (AP) - Americans who want to respond to attacks 9 / 11 terrorist $ 1.5 billion to hundreds of charities established to serve victims, their families and their memories. But a decade later, an Associated Press survey shows that many of those non-profit organizations have failed miserably.

There are some who have spent enormous sums on themselves, those who can not account for the money they received, those with little results to show for their spending and those who have not yet file returns of income tax. Yet many charities continue to raise funds on behalf of Sept. 11.

A charity has raised over $ 700,000 for Memorial Quilt giant, but there is no comforter. Another has raised more than $ 4 million to help victims, but failed to publicly account for how she spent all the money. A third helps support a flag 9 / 11 sold to profit the company founder.

There are other charities that can account for virtually every dollar received - except that all the money went to pay for fund raising, not the planned mission.

To be sure, most of the 325 charities identified by the AP followed the rules perfectly accounted spending and closed after completion of identified objectives.

There were charities to help sick and dying first responders, to help families of the dead, to help survivors and to honor the memory of the victims. And there are charities that revolve around the flag, patriotism, motorcycle rallies and memorials of all sizes and shapes.

But in almost all categories of 9 / 11 non-profit, an AP analysis of tax records and other documents discovered patterns attacked by the shady dealings, questionable expenditures and questionable intentions. Many of those money are still raising small, founded by people with no experience running a nonprofit.

- The Arizona-based charity that raised $ 713 000 for a duvet 9 / 11 Memorial has promised that it would be large enough to cover 25 football fields, but there are only a few hundred sheets packed in boxes decorated in a unit storage.

One third of the money raised went to the founder of the organization and its relatives, according to tax records and interviews. Chairman of the Board, a 84-year Catholic priest, said he did not know he was the president and thought that only small amounts of money had been raised.He said he did not know that the founder had given an allowance of $ 200 per week car, reimbursement of rent and a $ 45 000 payment for a loan unreported.
