It was the Attack of the Killer Parson Russell, Quinte
Tomatoes dominated the household this past week.
It was a replay of the 1978 horror/comedy, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.
But this time, instead of the tomatoes going berserk and turning on humanity, a beefsteak hybrid from our garden clashed with our dog.
It is a sad tale of a misunderstood, non-threatening big ripe tomato and Quinte, a Parson Russell Terrier, kissing cousin to the insane Jack Russell Terrier, and more high-strung than a teen who hasn't received a text message in the past 15 minutes.
Allow me to set the scene.
I grow tomatoes, as do many people, and I take particular care to ensure they are cream of the crop. That includes triple mix, cow manure compost, frequent watering, fertilization with Miracle Gro every few weeks – you get the picture.
I always plant a couple of those big potted tomatoes to go with the little fellers so that we get some juicy beefsteak ones early, like around the middle of July.
Sure enough, a giant appeared to be ripening nicely on the vine right on the target date. I watched this baby like an expectant father and when I judged it to be a couple of days short of supreme, I picked it so as to not let anything go wrong, as in hail, insects or some other calamity.
This mother was as big as a softball and redder than Lucille Ball's hair.
Handling it like a newborn, I put it carefully on the south-facing living room window sill for the last two days of sun. It is the only window sill capable of cradling such a huge treasure. I dreamt of the perfect tomato cut in big juicy slices on lightly-toasted white bread, with a generous sprinkling of salt and accompanied by a glass of cold milk. Oh, baby.
The morning of day one, and everything was going according to the script, with the sun shining brightly on my prized fruit. (Tomatoes are not vegetables, although my reaction is, who cares?).
I adjourned to the patio to have a cigarette. Since the renovations, I am not allowed to smoke in the house and for the most part I don't. This winter should be fun. Maybe, says the wise voice in my head, it is time to quit.
Anyway, I am outside puffing away, and then I heard rumblings of impending disaster. Mind you, I didn't click into it at first. Quinte often goes on a rant and starts barking and "Woo, wooing" if she thinks there is a bread crumb under the couch or her food dish is pushed too close to the refrigerator (I know, crazy, but she is a Parson Russell) or something new has been added to the landscape.
