Debate on Everglades drilling revived by Bachmann

(AP) Everglades National Park, Florida - here in the marshes, the circle of dragonflies and egrets glide above. When the hydrofoil stops, drop a happy calm over the Everglades in Florida, a little more than the sound of raindrops soft landing on the calm waters pierced by Sawgrass.

This is a unique place known for alligators, swamps and mangroves. But could it be known, instead of oil rigs and tankers?

A debate that seems to close the door over oil drilling in the Everglades expansion was revived by the only Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, Minnesota when the member said this week that it would be open to the idea. Although few expect his comments to the amount to any change in current U.S. policy and the amount of oil is not huge, they have become the topic of the day among environmentalists and others who revere this place known as the "River of Grass."

If the drilling sounds like a strange form to this natural wonder, maybe it should not. It has been underway in the Everglades for decades.

The story begins with the entrepreneur Barron Collier, in 1921, bought 1.3 million acres of land in Florida, and became the largest landowner in the state. Oil was discovered on earth in 1943. As the environmental movement peaked in the 1970s, Congress sought to protect the land and created the Big Cypress National Preserve to the west of most of Everglades National Park.

With deals and land swaps, however, the Collier family retained the rights to drill and continues to pump oil to date.

"That was part of the Faustian bargain," said Stuart Pimm, professor of conservation ecology at Duke University.

Collier Resources Co., which controls mining operations, and his mother, Barron Collier Cos., declined to comment on their interest in drilling.

Operations was nearly at an end thanks to an agreement negotiated by the administration of President George W. Bush. In 2002, he announced a $ 120 million to buy oil and mining rights.

Gale Norton, Secretary of Interior at the time, he hailed as a victory for the "long-term preservation of the Everglades."But the deal ultimately fell through when Congress refused to approve the payment amid allegations the government was significantly overpaying.

Since then, Collier Resources has sought to expand its returns through increased exploration and drilling.

This book was written by Robert Collier some time ago, it’s one of the two self-help books he wrote.    Actually, calling it a self-help book would be pitiful.    It’s more than that.  It’s a life changing series of reports that really did change my mindset and my business attitude.  

Man, if it weren’t for this book….   there’d be serious problems.
