As a player with at least 10 years of major-league service time, and five with the same team, Ramirez has no-trade rights. He’s made it clear to reporters and the front office that he doesn’t want to go anywhere else.

Ramirez is not universally beloved by Cubs fans. He’s not a grinder, but he’s brutally honest. He’s not one to bluff, play games or negotiate through the media. He’s certainly not looking for the attention.

Internally, the Cubs haven’t ruled out the idea of re-signing Pena once his “pillow contract” expires. They could also offer arbitration, wait to see if he gets a multi-year deal elsewhere and take the draft-pick compensation.

The idea of bringing back Ramirez – or a strong trade market developing for him – would have seemed crazy on May 28. At that point, he had one home run through his first 175 at-bats.

Ramirez got hot and began Saturday with 39 RBI in his last 41 games. He was hitting .378 with 13 homers in his last 26 games. There has not been a more productive third baseman in the National League this season.

“I don’t think there’s anything I can say that’s going to be complementary enough on the two months (he’s) put together,” manager Mike Quade said. “It’s really been something (and) it’s not like he takes three games off. He’s (been) consistently good and hitting in big situations. He’s what you need in the three-, four-hole.”

The 33-year-old Ramirez – who can opt to become a free agent at season’s end – has already signed one below-market deal to stay in Chicago. The Cubs hold a $16 million option for next year that could be used in talks about an extension.

None of the other third basemen positioned to hit the free-agent market are game-changers. They are more like utility guys: . Next year’s payroll – as well as ownership’s appetite for a megadeal – is still to be determined.

Pena has flaws, but he's been everything the Cubs thought he would be when they structured a $10 million deal across three fiscal years.

Pena’s batting .224 with 20 homers, 51 RBI and 101 strikeouts. He didn’t hit his first home run until May 3, but didn’t complain when several balls fell just short in the cold weather.
