BUFFALO CITY -- The staff at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is working to make sure the Dare County town of Buffalo City doesn't slide entirely into the swamp. The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., reported that a visitors center is scheduled to open next year at the refuge. Wildlife officials plan to build a theater that's reminiscent of the general store where Buffalo City residents once shopped. The contractor building the theater is looking for artifacts and photographs depicting the thriving days of Buffalo City, which lasted from the mid-1800s through the 1950s.
